Red House Painters are now a 4AD enduring artist and have become a cult favorite band in the years that followed their debut. They have recorded many records over their time on the record label which have helped define it. 4AD will release a box set containing their four first albums, Down Colorful Hill (Rollercoaster), Red House Painters, Ocean Beach, and Bridge on April 21st.
Drop: a reverb-drenched six-song debut
Red House Painters had only been formed one year before their debut album, 'Drop'. This six-song LP was full of reverb and reminded me of an early C100 Memorex cassette. The songs were a bit slow, but they had a nice feel to them. Mark Kozelek’s vocals were clear.

The band's reverb soaked guitars reminded me of Neil Young. It was also known for their strong penchant to cover classic rock songs. Kozelek, however, had his own material, which wasn’t always the easiest to access. He made John Denver's song 'Take Me Home' acoustic and covered Simon and Garfunkel 'I Am A Rock' on the 1993 album Rollercoaster.
'Moments': a more pastoral approach
The 'Ocean Beach' album that followed saw a more folk-influenced approach to the music. Their early albums were not known for their long, droning epics. They now have more melodies as well as lyrical narratives and arrangements. It was the last album that featured founding guitarist Gorden Mack, and it saw Kozelek and the band moving towards a more radio friendly sound. There was more upbeat songwriting on 'Summer Dress' and 'San Geronimo' and the album's covers of 'Long Distance Runaround' by Yes and 'Drop' by Fleetwood Mac are a lot more relaxed than their earlier work.
'Long Distance Runaround' is an acoustic cover from a 1971 hit.
The Red House Painters had covered a lot of classic rock tracks over the years, but 'Long Distance Runaround' was their first acoustic cover. This is not their best cover but it's a solid one that Kozelek uses to break out of his shell, delivering better songs and melodies.

'Ocean Beach': a more introspective approach
Kozelek was more folk-influenced with Ocean Beach. They don't have as many long, dreamlike songs as their earlier albums and more songs are more reflective.
