Job Durfee

Job Durfee's work spans generations and influences. He hails from Vermont, but studied art in Savannah, Georgia, and pursued a career in illustration. He was able to work on commercial promotional materials and album covers after he graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design. Then he discovered his passion for painting. Now, he paints fanciful, contemporary narratives with contrasting color palettes.

Job Durfee's papers date from 1809 to 1868, but the bulk of his correspondence dates from 1822 to 1824. Many of the letters are addressed directly to him in Washington, DC, where they discuss issues like patents, national politics, lighthouse keepers, taxes, and tariffs. Charles Durfee (his brother) also sent him letters, which were about color or health.

Mary Colman Wheeler

Mary Colman Wheeler (painters of the state) is the theme for the Providence Art Club's upcoming show. It honors a local woman who has made a name of herself as both an artist and as an active member. Wheeler, a long-standing member, was honored in the years that followed her death with a memorial exhibit. Wheeler was an independent, fascinating woman who was a strong force in Rhode Island’s art scene.

Mary Colman Wheeler created the Wheeler School. She was born near Concord, Massachusetts and was a direct ancestor of a family which was one of the original settlers of the state. The Wheelers lived close to the Transcendentalists, and other literary figures of her time. She was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery alongside other Concord luminaries.

Edward M. Bannister

Bannister was just thirty-one when he began his career in art. Although he received little formal training, he studied at the Lowell Institute of Art and later opened his own studio. He was a Barbizon artist who focused on nature's changing moods. His paintings often featured well-drawn figures. He attributed the artistic talent to his faith.

Bannister was also a fan of Native American culture. His spirituality reflects this affinity. As he grew older, his style of painting changed and his ability to use color improved. At fifty-two years old, he died from a heart attack. He was buried in Providence's North Burial Ground.

William Trost Richards

William Trost Richards ranks among the top American landscape painters. He was also associated with the Hudson River School. His style was very detailed and had atmospheric characteristics. He also adopted the informal composition styles of the English Pre-Raphaelites. Richards was born in Philadelphia. He spent his summers in Atlantic City, Cape May, and Newport, Rhode Island before settling down in Newport, Rhode Island.

Richards began to paint coastal scenes in the mid-1860s. His practice eventually led Richards to use watercolor to capture atmospheric effects and the ocean. He was considered America's greatest watercolorist by the late 1870s. His seascapes were especially impressive and captured the beauty of the sky and water. Richards was particularly fond of the shoreline near Newport, Rhode Island, and purchased a summer house on Conanicut Island in 1882. By 1890, he had moved permanently to Newport.
